LO1: Photography and compassion

Leading lines

Leading lines are lines within the picture that lead the eyes to another point of the image. For example the parallel lines of railway tracks lead your eyes away towards the distant horizon are used a lot. It’s one of the most effective compositional tools available to photographers because our eyes are naturally drawn along lines and path in photos.

Rule of thirds

Rule of third is breaking down a picture into 9 parts both horizontally and vertically. It creates a sense of balance and complexity without making the images appear too static or busy.

Depth of field

Depth of field is how sharp or blurry the area behind a subject. The aperture on a camera lets more or less light in depending on its length, the lower the f/stop the more exposure (larger aperture) and the higher the f/stop the less exposure (small aperture)

Framing

Framing is when you use the surrounding to frame the centre of interest
Viewpoint

Viewpoint is the position from which the photograph is taken. It could be from above, below or eyelevel.
Cropping
Cropping is when you remove the outer part of an image to improve the framing.
Lighting

Lighting can highlight particular part of an image that will be seen more easily by the audience. Shadows and silhouettes created by the direction of light can also create visual interest and mystery in a photograph. The difference between a light part of an image and a dark part of an image can add drama and emphasise certain parts of an image. Light objects should be photographed against dark background.
Exposure

Exposure is the correct amount of light needed to fall on the image sensor to capture the perfect photograph.
Aperture

Aperture is the small opening where light passes through the camera lens. The lower f/stop gives more exposure because they represent the larger apertures and the higher f/stop gives less exposure because they represent smaller apertures.

Shutter speed

Shutter speed is the length of time the camera shutter is open to expose light in the camera sensor. If the shutter speed is fast I freeze the picture but if it’s slow it creates a motion blur.

Orientation

Orientation is the way you take and display your photography. You make chooses on how you want to take your photos such as vertical or horizontal, portrait or landscape mode and if you want it online or in a museum
