LO1: Genres and purpose

Photojournalism photography is still life images taken to record recently occurring events. Photographers like Henri Cartier Bresson, Tony Vaccaro, Luc Delahaye, Eddie Adams and many more use this type of genre to report what’s happening using only an image instead of words. These photographers have the skills to make creative decisions instantly and may encounter severe danger e.g. war, weather or crowds. They try to make the images relate to the viewer on a cultural level. These photos are usually broadcasted in the media to give out a story; sometimes they may be manipulated to give a particular side of a story although ethically they are not allowed to do this. The work should be honest, impartial and strictly journalistic. They’re also published on Wall Street, Danish Union of Press Photographer’s (first in the World), Magnum Photos and National Press Photographers Organization.

Landscape was originally used to fill in the blank space behind a person and gradually landscape photography became a very popular style go photography. Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending and other times microscopic. It must make connection with the viewer and tell a story, it must entertain the viewer more than once. Landscape photography isn't about taking a beautiful picture of a location; it’s more about the memories that come out form it and sharing it with others. Some of the landscape photographers are Charlie Waite, Ross Hossinott, Adam Burton and Peter Watson.

Portrait photography is photos of a person or group of people that displays the expression, personality, and mood of the subject. The focus of the photograph is usually the person's face, although the entire body and the background or context may be included. Photographers should make sure the model is comfortable because if they’re not, it would show through the photo. The photographers should also try not to over expose the photography. It is so important to plan your shoot, location, costumes, models and theme before taking the photos to get the best results. Some of the best portrait photographers are Steve McCurry, Lee Jeffries, Jimmy Nelsson, Rehahn, Eric Lafforgue, Manny Librodo and Phil Borges.

Wildlife photography is a concerned with documenting various forms of wildlife in their natural habitat. Photographers should know there gear and settings before going out and taking any random picture to avoid missing the moment. As well as knowing your gear you should also know your subject, you want to capture the behaviour and movement of your subject, knowing your subject allows you to be prepared and capture that one time shot. Photographers also make sure the time of day is right and the natural light is good to great a beautiful shoot that could speak to you. Wildlife photography like many photography has a different concept and meaning to each person. My favourite wildlife photographers are Will & Matt Burrard-Lucas, Andy Rouse, Joel Sartore, Moose Peterson, Jess Findlay and Martin Bailey.

Night photography are photographs taken outdoors between dusk and dawn. Night photographers generally have a choice between using artificial light and using a long exposure, exposing the scene for seconds, minutes, and even hours in order to give the film or digital sensor enough time to capture a usable image. To get the best image you would need to take the photos in the best image quality for example RAW file, tripods give the image a much sharper. Photographers study the scene of the location they will take the photos. The best might photographers in my opinion are Bob West, Jim Downie, Roger E, Jose Maria Cuellar and Bastian Groove.

Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Photographers have complete control of this genre but they photographer needs to be creative in order to capture it in an interesting and engaging way. The subject you photograph should be eye-catching and interesting with usually a plain background to make the object the centre of attention. One of the most important things in still life photography is lighting, studio lights give the best results but photographers can also use any light they can get their hands on. Some of the best still life photographers are Marcel Christ, Sam Kaplan and Jenny van Sommers.

Street photography is photography that features the chance encounters and random accidents within public places. It doesn’t necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. Before taking any photos photographers will do research on the location to get a feel of what types of photos to take and the right settings. The photographers need to know their legal and ethical roles of taking before taking the photos. Street photographers: Wittner Fabrice, Zack Arias, Richard Sandler, Jimmay Bones and Alexander Richter.

Fashion/studio photography devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. Fashion photography is most often conducted for advertisements or fashion magazines. Fashion photography should convey an essence of authority, your model should be comfortable. It’s all about beauty and fashions, to get the perfect photos photographers pull all the elements of the scene and the model together to reflect this. Taking the photos in a studio allows you to control thee light and create successful results. My favourite fashion photographers are Horst Diekgerdes, Alex Sainsbury, Andrew G. Hobbs and Alessio Bolzoni
