LO1: Analysing Duncan Philpott's wrok

Duncan Philpott is an outdoor action and adventure photographer. His photography is mainly used for advertisement and most of the time to capture the one-time moments in his adventures. He has worked with many briefs but the most recent ones were for the Sheffield City Council and he was one out of the fifteen photographers around the globe that have worked for Nike's Instagram.

The advantages of Duncan's job was traveling the world, freedom, exposure and collaborating with other photographer and big companies.

But the disadvantages of his job is no job security, no fixed income, long hours, travel budget and paper work which include proposals, personal projects, marketing, self-promotion and interviews.

Duncan does many different types of photography such as photojournalism - capturing the moment, editorial - telling the story, commercial - advertising and promoting the product, personal- freedom and self-expression and insta-gramming - personal work.

Duncan has to think of the location and planning when he receives a brief, he needs to use local knowledge, Google maps, think about the light positions/ natural light (sun), shoot schedule and who is available when.

photo analysis

This is one of my favourite photographs. Duncan Philpott took a landscape photo of a curvy road that looks like it’s in the middle of nowhere with mountains. He took it from a point of view angle to create a leading line threw the road which draws the audiences attention to a specific part of the frame which could be the mountains and sky. He has took other many photos of mountains and the sky so this could be another way of show casing his photo and make sure the audience is look right where he wants to them to look. He also does action and adventure photography so this could be a photograph that combines both genres together; the road could show the place he took his action bike riding photography and the mountains shows his more adventures side of photography. He uses a simple composition to show the two representations and to help the audience focus on the part he would like them to see. It looks like he has taken the photos in a fast shutter speed with a deep depth of field to capture a clear and high quality photo. I think he used black and white because it forces the audience to thing differently and create their own meaning. I think he used natural lighting to make it look as realistic and neat as possible

Meaning
This photograph could have a different meaning to everyone, for example people that have an interest in colour photography have a different way of seeing it than the people that live in the same circumstances shown in the image. It could be seen in a very deep and dark way for example the red could scream out danger to some people like the red represents blood and danger, in that situation the photo could show that something happened in that room and only seeing the ceiling nothing else shows that it’s been kept hidden. Some that live in the same circumstances may see it as a homily photo that warms up their heart and shows that no matter where you live you could take a photo and make something out of it weather that is something beautiful or something unique. And some including me might just like it because of all the colour and composition and find it satisfying. The road carries on to the mountains which could represent that if you work hard you will get to your goal. It also could just show how beautiful the outdoors are, the black and white and no one being there shows that there’s a beautiful and fun place but no one is using it, it helps people stop for a minute and look up
